ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ …, 2 الْبَقَرَة 2 الْبَقَرَة Baqarah al-baqarah al-baqara al-baqara baqara baqarah Medinan, تِلْكَ And do not spy, neither backbite one another; would any of you like to eat the flesh of his brother dead? بِيَدِهِ And spy not on one another, nor let some of you backbite on others. O you who have believed, avoid most assumptions (guesswork about things of which you have no certain knowledge). حِسَابُهُمْ Avoid suspicion as much (as possible): for suspicion in some cases is a sin: And spy not on each other behind their backs. Fear Allah; for Allah is the Accepter of repentance, Merciful, O you who believe! Allah the Exalted forbids His faithful servants from being suspicious, which includes having doubts and suspicions about the conduct of one's family, relatives and other people in general. قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَى مِن And fear God; God pardons and is compassionate. ٱلْمَلَأُ This is also demostrated in the Hadith of Jibril, peace be upon him, when he questioned the Prophet about Islam, then Iman then Ihsan. ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ O you who believe! ... [Related by Ibn Kathir in his commentary on the Qur'an.] Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother You would hate it. (And spy not), on each other. أَخَاهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ (Those among you who were best in Jahiliyyah, are the best among you in Islam, if they attain religious understanding.)" ٱلَّذِينَ Indeed, some conjectures are sins (liable to punishment in the Hereafter). ٱلَّذِينَ for those who repent and return to Him. O you who believe, you shall avoid any suspicion, for even a little bit of suspicion is sinful. Would like one of you to eat (the) flesh (of) his brother, dead? And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful. The Leader of the faithful `Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "Never think ill of the word that comes out of your believing brother's mouth, as long as you can find a good excuse for it." (Shun much suspicion) this was revealed about two Companions of the Prophet (pbuh) who backbit Salman al-Farisi and also thought ill of Usamah, the Servant of Allah's Messenger (pbuh). Lies, suspicion, backbiting, slander and gossip are totally alien to Islam. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَوَّابٌ رَّحِيÙ, yāayyuhā alladhÄ«na āmanÅ« ij'tanibÅ« kathÄ«ran mina l-ẓani inna baʿḍa l-ẓani ith'mun walā tajassasÅ« walā yaghtab baʿḍukum baʿḍan ayuḥibbu aḥadukum an yakula laḥma akhÄ«hi maytan fakarih'tumÅ«hu wa-ittaqÅ« l-laha inna l-laha tawwābun raḥīmu. Allah the Exalted said about backbiting; (neither backbite one another), thus prohibiting it, which was explained in a Hadith collected by Abu Dawud that Abu Hurayrah said, "It was asked, `O Allah's Messenger! Ibn Abi Hatim recorded this statement. (Do not shun each other; do not ignore one another; do not hate one another, and do not envy one another, and be brothers, O servants of Allah. Some scholars stated that it is not necessary for one to ask those whom he has backbitten to forgive him, because if they knew what was said about them, they could be hurt more than if they were not told about it. وَقَدْ The majority of scholars have stated that repentance for committing the sin of backbiting is that one refrains from backbiting intending not to repeat it again. So do not pry into others' secrets and do not backbite. لِلَّهِ This Surah contains many lessons for Muslims to live by. عَنِ And don't spy or backbite one another. And have Taqwa of Allah. Never! Do not be arrogant. And spy not upon one another, nor shall you backbite one another. خَطْبُكُمْ Surely ye would abhor it. The Messenger of Allah replied: "If what you say about him is true, then you have backbitten him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him." At-Tirmidhi collected this Hadith and said "Hasan Sahih." 49.12. إِلَيْهِمُ And do not spy or backbite each other. عَلَىٰ (He is just like the dog that eats its vomit.) The Prophet asked, أَدْخَلْتَ ذلِكَ مِنْكَ فِي ذلِكَ مِنْهَا كَمَا يَغِيبُ الْمِيلُ فِي الْمُكْحُلَةِ وَالرِّشَا فِي الْبِئْرِ؟. With such consistent treatment the Muslim community was purged and attained its high standard. For, behold, some of such suspicion and guesswork deplete your communal energy. Ibn Majah also collected this Hadith. Indeed, some assumption (is) sin. Allah the Exalted said. …, لَوْ أَنَّنَا 8 Law 'Annanā الْأَنْعَام 6 الْأَنْعَام Anam al-an`am al-anam al-anaam al-annam al-an'aam an'aam anaam anam Meccan, 8 الْأَعْرَاف 7 الْأَعْرَاف Araf al-a`raf al-araf al-a'raaf a'raaf araf araaf Meccan, قَالَ ٱلْأَعْلَى …, قَالَتِ Have fear of God; God accepts repentance and is All-merciful, O you who believe, abstain from many of the suspicions. Surat Al-Hujurat [verse 12] - O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Surely, Allah is the one who Accepts repentance, Merciful. يَعْلَمُ Would any of you enjoy eating the flesh of his dead brother? ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ …, قٓ لَا Abu Dawud recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said, كُلُّ الْمُسْلِمِ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِ حَرَامٌ مَالُهُ وَعِرْضُهُ وَدَمُهُ، حَسْبُ امْرِىءٍ مِنَ الشَّرِّ أَنْ يَحْقِرَ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِم. (But if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not decrease anything in reward for your deeds...) `He will not decrease any of your rewards,' as Allah said; وَمَآ أَلَتْنَـهُمْ مِّنْ عَمَلِهِم مِّن شَىْءٍ. Avoid many suspicions, ˹for˺ indeed, some suspicions are sinful. Sufyan Ath-Thawri said, "The Himyar (who resided in Yemen) dealt with each other according to their provinces, while the Arabs in the Hijaz (Western Arabia) dealt with each other according to their tribes. He led his camel to the bottom of the valley, where he had her sit down. some suspicion is a crime. غَنِمْتُم (I say this and invoke Allah for forgiveness for me and for you.)" Would any of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would surely be revolted by it Then fear God. Surely ye would loathe it. You would surely detest it. …, بَمَا 14 Bamā الْحِجْر 15 الْحِجْر Hijr al-hijr al-hijr hijr Meccan, وَقَالَ ٱللَّهِ Fear God, God is ever forgiving and most merciful, O you who believe! So you would hate it! – Quran 42:37. أُبَرِّئُ And spy not (on someone’s unknown matters or secrets), nor backbite one another.
